I recently attended the songwriters night at Hotel Indigo on a Thursday night. I made the 1 mile trek from the Gulch to see what kind of talent would be hanging out at the trendy hotel that is on West End Boulevard and only a few blocks from the Music Row area. I was not only pleasantly surprised at the talent but I was particularly blown away by several of the singer/songwriters who showed up for this event.
I had actually received an invitation from a lovely young singer on Facebook who unfortunately couldn’t make it, but there was plenty of other talent on hand.
When I first arrived I obtained a seat close to the host, Lee Rascone, so I could get the names of the artists as they performed. Lee is a great host who reminds me a little bit of a David Allen Coe character. Lee looked like he could have been the inspiration for the Jeff Bridges character in the movie Crazy Heart. I could see Bad Blake hosting a songwriter’s night in a small lounge in Nashville.
gwendy-rich-susanAfter the server delivered my pizza and Barley Pop, I settled in for a night of music. It’s always a rough job doing these gigs, but I was up for the task! The first set was under way when I arrived. Three songwriters were on stage and they were taking turns playing their tunes. Each performer got to perform about 4 songs each. You could tell these songwriters seemed to be seasoned veterans of songwriters nights as they warmed up the crowd as I finished my pizza and ordered another Barley Pop. Gwendy Joysen, Rich Cambell, and Susan Alexander took turns playing songs, each displaying a variety of talent from clever songs to strong voices. Check out Gwendy Joysen at www.myspace.com/gwendyjoysen, Rich Cambell at www.myspace.com/397559542 , and Susan Alexander at www.myspace.com/susanalexandermusic.
joey-parkerNext up was the songwriting partners of Parker Welling and Joey Hyde. They amped up the talent and got my blood pumping to set the tone for the rest of the night! Joey Hyde with his boy band good looks played his well crafted songs and generally entertained the crowd with his humor. He kind of reminded me of a cross between Fiction Family, Nickel Creek, The Avett Brothers, Keith Urban, and and maybe a little bit John Mayer. In other words his style was all over the board but his fusion of pop and country seemed to work in an amazing way. He definitely knows how to charm a crowd and teaming with Parker Welling they won the crowd over fast. Listen to Joey Hyde at www.myspace.com/joeyhydemusic.
Parker Welling especially caught my eye with her great voice, piercing eyes that appeared to be looking into my musical soul, and a smile that would melt any audience. This girl absolutely glowed on stage. You wouldn’t think she could get any prettier until she opens her mouth and starts to sing. She had made the comment that she had just got her voice back after losing it for a week, but you couldn’t tell by the power she had in her vocal range. Parker was accompanied by Joey Hyde on several of her songs and these two together makes a one-two punch combination that I could definitely handle seeing at least once a week. Be sure to check out Parker's talents at www.myspace.com/parkerwelling Now I was excited! Bring on the next act! Hold the Barley Pop please, I’m high on life and music.
blessingNext up was the amazing and talented Blessing Offor and Jamie Smite. Blessing is a blind performer who knows how to steal a show. It’s easy for fans to draw a comparison of Blessing to Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles but Blessing is definitely an original. He was so good that during the set that he and Jamie had been taking turns playing their songs, the owner of the establishment demanded Blessing play two songs in a row. It was an awkward situation with Jamie looking confused and Blessing was trying to figure out who was actually trying to make him sing out of turn. He joked that he wasn’t being paid so he wasn’t taking any orders but ended up obliging the persistent owner who promptly pulled up a chair next to the piano and tapped his foot in excitement as Blessing poured out another song. Blessing played two particularly great songs one called “Let’s Dance” and the other “Sunday Girl”! Blessing is extremely gifted and confident. He ended his set with the statement “I’ll see you at the Grammy’s”. I actually believe he’ll make it there. Check out the incredible Blessing Offor at www.myspace.com/blessingoffor.
At this point during the show I was starting to have the urge to go back home and practice my instruments and amp up my songwriting efforts. I was not only feeling over matched instrumentally but I realized I had a long way to go as far as my own songwriting endeavors.
jamieJamie Smite held her own playing next to Blessing. She sang a variety of songs and also did a duet with Blessing. She had a sweet voice and sang a funny number called “I Liked You Better Online”. I would love to catch her on stage again when she is not sharing a stage with Blessing. It was a little hard for her to shine as bright as possible with Blessing commanding so much of the spot light with his presence that you would only expect from a future star. Jamie did an excellent job though with all of the excitement going on!
So just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, the final set cranked up. Alison Parson, Rebacca Moreland, and their ring leader Tyrone Carreker took the stage and the evening’s magic continued. These three swapped turns playing a variety of songs laced with soul, blues, pop, and modern country.
allisonAlison Parson put on a great performance having just been notified an hour before the show that she needed to fill in for someone who couldn’t make it. She has a wonderful voice, stage presence, and great songs. Her influences seemed to draw from many styles of music from blues, pop, country and folk. She held her own on the stage with Rebecca Moreland and the ever present and smiling Tyrone Carreker. Check out the astonishing Alison Parson at www.myspace.com/alisonparson.
rebeccaRebecca Moreland to put it simply can flat wail. She like Parker Welling is beautiful, young, great musician, and a talented singer. Accompanied by Tyrone Carreker much of the night, Rebecca is simply a pleasure to watch and to hear with her fantastic voice singing very creative lyrics. She played and sang several powerful songs that showed off her skills as a vocalist and an amazing songwriter. She ended her set with a song called “Lullaby”. Do yourself a favor and check out Rebecca’s talent at www.myspace.com/rebeccamorelandmusic.
tyroneIn my opinion it’s fitting that I saved the best for the last. As I sat an watched Tyrone Carreker on stage I kept wondering how is this guy not a major star or why has he not been signed to any type of major deal. He has the soul of Keb Mo and Craig David, the guitar laced melodies of James Taylor, and the coolness of Jack Johnson. Dressed in his sweater and a Bing Crosby style hat, he is a forced to be reckoned with on stage. His voice is silky smooth, great smile, and his finger picking and mastery of the guitar had me doing a reality check to make sure that I really wasn’t in Los Angeles catching the next big thing in the pop world. Tyrone pound for pound is one of the best songwriters I’ve caught live in Nashville in awhile and I’ve attended many events with some of the top hit songwriters in town performing. Go out and catch Tyrone live or check him out on the web at www.myspace.com/tyronecarreker.
It was an amazing songwriters night in Nashville with very little country but a whole lot of talented artists and songwriters. I highly suggest catching a songwriters night at the small and charming lounge at the Hotel Indigo. Email Lee Rascone at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. This is probably not the best place to try out playing music live for the first time in public. Artists at this particular songwriters night are very good performers and strong writers and Lee puts together a great line up each night. Keep up the great job Lee!!
